With a strong affinity for the roots of American music, Kimmi Bitter is a throwback mixed between 1960’s pop-country and the Californian singer-songwriter. Styling her songs around the classic sounds of Patsy Cline with The Jordanaire’s, Loretta Lynn, and Linda Ronstadt, her debut album “West Side Twang” features a California take on traditional country and soul. Wether singing about love or heartbreak, the San Diego native’s vocals deliver a consistent warmth and laid-back innocence.
Kimmi Bitter may consider herself an artist born in the wrong era. Struggling to connect with modern top 40 hits, she drowned herself in the various genres of the 60’s and 70’s analog era and took a plunge into the roots revival scene forming and fronting heavy blues-rock band The Night Howls in 2016 to overcome her debilitating stage fright. However, longing to record stripped down love ballads and twangy tunes, she was more suited to the singer-songwriter friendly genre of traditional country which led her to produce her debut solo album “West Side Twang” in 2019.
A strong believer in minimalism and retro-technology, all songs were recorded live band to analog tape at Lost Ark Studio in hometown San Diego with engineer Mike Butler and a backing band full of local virtuosos. She states the EP “is about the tape hiss, human vocal pads taking place over a modern synth, tracking the innate energy of a live band and the imperfections that our perfectly produced music society lacks. Music is a tool for making human connection and people are hungry for it. A connection that thrives through empathy, vulnerability, authenticity, truth, flaws — and ‘West Side Twang’ is a vision directed towards that.
